Artist R. Benjamin Jones in his studio

Maryland realist painter R. Benjamin Jones (1936–2017) used his artistic talents to document the beauty around him. Jones studied with master realist Jacques Maroger at the Baltimore Institute of Fine Arts (now Maryland Institute College of Art), then graduated from University of Maryland, College Park before attending the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. As an ordained Presbyterian pastor, he pursued drawing and painting as a form of therapy and relaxation until becoming a professional artist in his 40s. When Jones began painting full-time, he focused on realistic paintings of rural landscapes. The result was a body of paintings and drawings that documented the environment in which he lived and traveled. Jones's works have been shown in many galleries and museums, including the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, the Baltimore Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian Institution.

Please join the UMUC community in celebrating this reflection of Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New England through the eyes of the artist.
