It turns out, she also found a great career at the university, as well as a leadership role as vice president of Distance Learning Membership of UMUC's Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) Chapter—the first and only student chapter to feature a distance learning component.

Specialist Erika Sides, an active-duty servicemember and UMUC student currently deployed in Iraq, has gone above and beyond her normal call of duty to help the young students of Iraq. Because of her efforts, UMUC’s support, children in her Iraqi school district now have the school supplies they desperately needed to attend school.
