Sarah J. Dufendach
Sarah J. Dufendach, vice president for Federal Government Relations, joined UMUC in 2012 as an expert in government relations, legislative process, strategic and tactical analysis, campaign strategy, and more. A 25-year veteran of Capitol Hill, Ms. Dufendach served as chief of staff for U.S. Representative David Bonior during his tenures as both House Majority Whip and Minority Whip; as chief operating officer (COO) of the Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation; and as COO and vice president for Legislative Affairs of Common Cause, in Washington, D.C.
Ms. Dufendach is an experienced leader who in her roles as COO managed annual budgets of $25 million and staffs of 60 or more. And as chief of staff for Rep. Bonior, she coordinated five successful Whip elections within the Democratic Caucus and served as senior advisor to the Michigan Democratic congressional delegation.
Ms. Dufendach has been featured in the National Journal as one of the top 20 congressional staffers, profiled in Almanac of the Unelected as one of the top House leadership aides, and consistently listed in Roll Call as one of the top 50 House and Senate staffers. A graduate of Michigan State University with a degree in socioeconomics, she has completed graduate-level coursework at the University of Michigan and executive training from the Federal Executive Institute and the Center for Creative Leadership.
