A Message from UMUC Acting President Javier Miyares

March 22, 2012

Dear Colleagues:

As Chancellor Kirwan has indicated, the leadership of University of Maryland University College is in transition. Over the past few weeks, we have weathered a challenging period. Now, it is time for us to move forward together.

I am honored to serve as your acting president. I was also honored to serve as a member of Dr. Susan Aldridge's senior leadership team. Dr. Aldridge led UMUC to new heights and I congratulate her on her tireless work and many successes. We owe her a deep debt of gratitude, and I am sure I speak for everyone in wishing her only success and happiness in her future endeavors.

As we chart UMUC's future course, I want to first reaffirm my commitment to our core values: students first, excellence, accountability, integrity, innovation, diversity and respect. These are values upon which UMUC pioneered adult higher education 65 years ago and these are values upon which we will drive forward as a 21st century global leader in higher education innovation and quality.

From its beginnings in 1947, UMUC has focused on the individual student, and that will never change. As an institution, UMUC is today a global family of more than 3,100 superb faculty, 1,700 dedicated staff members, 92,000 students, our proud alumni, our advisory boards and strategic partners, and thousands of benefactors who make it possible for others to attend college.

Today, in classrooms and online, from Adelphi to Afghanistan, we are the custodians of our history and the architects of our future.

As we begin, let me assure you that I stand behind the academic integrity of our institution and the efforts of our administrators. Further, UMUC sees its service to military students around the world as a core component of its mission, and we remain focused on and fully committed to that mission, now and going forward.

Our institution has made a positive difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands of people since 1947. Thanks to your efforts, UMUC continues to make a positive difference in so many lives today.

In the coming weeks, I look forward to communicating with you on a regular basis and sharing information about projects in development, designed to enhance the UMUC experience. We are also preparing for our commencements around the world honoring this year's graduates, including our servicemembers in Afghanistan and the first students to complete their coursework in cybersecurity.

Thank you, once again, for your dedication to UMUC. I deeply appreciate and share your pride in being part of our global community.
