Distance Education: The Bridge to a Stronger America
University System of Maryland (USM) Chancellor William E. Kirwan served as keynote speaker at a regional meeting of the American Distance Education Consortium on May 8 in Adelphi, Maryland. In his remarks, Kirwan looked toward the future of distance education and how it is transforming the higher education paradigm.
“There is no question that distance education is reaching a critical mass,” he said, referencing a Sloan Consortium report that found that almost one third of all higher education students take at least one course online.
Highlighting UMUC’s importance to the goals of both the USM and the state of Maryland, Kirwan explored how distance education represents a “disruptive technology and transformative innovation” that may help “usher in the changes needed for higher education to survive and thrive in the years to come.”
