An Important Message from UMUC Acting Provost Marie Cini

November 19, 2012

Dear Colleagues:

I am writing to share good news from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. A letter received today indicates that the commission has accepted the Supplemental Information Report we submitted in August 2012, which affirms that UMUC’s accreditation remains in good standing.

The commission’s decision was based upon a visit to UMUC by a team appointed by Middle States. The request for supplemental information and a team visit came in response to Chancellor Kirwan and President Miyares’s request for reaffirmation during the presidential transition last spring. The team visited August 23–24, 2012, and its members included well-respected administrators from peer institutions in Middle States’ region.

The visiting team met with a broad sample of faculty, staff, students, and administrators (a complete list appears in the team’s report here: The team also met with members of the shared governance councils and held a one-hour worldwide call-in session open to any UMUC staff or faculty member who wished to address them.

The team found that UMUC is in full compliance with the standards that were the subject of the Supplemental Information Report, namely Standard 8 on Student Admissions and Retention and Standard 11 on Educational Offerings. We’re proud to say that there were no negative findings in the team’s report. Moreover, the team commended UMUC for its focus on the ongoing improvement of student services and academic advisement.

I deeply appreciate the contributions of all the members of the university community who helped to bring about this successful outcome. UMUC’s ability to maintain excellence in education depends upon everyone’s hard work and dedication. We can all be proud that we are fully in compliance with the standards for accreditation as set by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and are continually working to improve our institution.
