I want to know who I am. . . . My sculptures express reflections on this inner and outer path that is my life. I seek the true nature of form and materials and the true nature my self in my work.

- Alan Binstock

The University of Maryland University College Arts Program is pleased to present A Celebration of Glass, Steel, and Stone, an exhibition of sculpture by Maryland artist Alan Binstock. Binstock’s sculptures are self-reflective, but they also explore and reveal the nature of his artistic materials. He describes his works as three-dimensional haiku—"ideas simplified to their minimal expressions, yet resonating with the soul of the materials used."

Mastering three media—glass, steel, and stone—and uniting them in sculpture is a technical challenge. Using both power tools and traditional chisels and hammers, Binstock pushes his materials to their limits in order to reveal their inherent qualities. "Glass and stone transmit light and color and break in very unique ways,” he writes. "Steel bends, melts, rusts, polishes with its own signature." His works create a dialog between disparate media, emphasizing and celebrating the connections between the sculptural elements.
