About your UNIX Account

Your UNIX account provides an opportunity for you to enhance your educational experience through the use of a multi-user computer system. You share the responsibility of maintaining the integrity of the system with all system users by guarding the security of your account (not allowing others to use it) and by managing your private file space (purging unneeded files). In addition, being courteous and professional in your interactions with other on-line users, both at UMUC and on any public network or system accessed via UMUC systems (such as the Internet), will ensure that all users receive the maximum benefits of UNIX system use. Information Technology must suspend the accounts of anyone suspected of misuse or failing to protect the rights of all users of UMUC's academic computer systems.

You are responsible for the security of your private file space and for all use of your account. If someone else obtains your password, that person may destroy or alter your files. Your password is the only protection that your account has. Please follow the guidelines in Changing Your Password, and guard your password as if it were the authorization code for your automatic bank teller card. This is for your protection.

If you suspect that your account has been compromised, please notify a UNIX systems staff member immediately. The UNIX staff may be contacted at 301-985-7400, available Monday - Friday from 7:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time .

Information Technology issues numbered class accounts to the teachers of all classes for which computer accounts are required. Class accounts expire at the end of the semester and cannot be extended or carried over. If you anticipate a grade of Incomplete, you may apply for a named student account before the end of the semester to complete your coursework.

Any registered UMUC student may apply for a named student account. Student accounts are automatically renewed at the beginning of each semester as long as you are registered for at least one class. Again, if you are clearing an Incomplete, you may apply for a named student account within the last 30 days of the current semester to have time to transfer files to the new account.

For instructions on how to create a named student account, please visit the FAQ page and select "How do I create a named student Unix account ?"
