Upholding academic integrity is a serious matter at UMUC.
Academic integrity refers to a set of shared values, principles, behaviors, and skills that lie at the heart of learning and scholarship. University of Maryland University College (UMUC) has a long history of commitment to academic integrity, reflecting its core values of truth, honesty, fairness, respect and responsibility. Graduates who have learned the values, principles, behaviors, and skills that characterize academic integrity are prepared to make choices based on an awareness of ethical contexts.
UMUC students are expected to maintain the highest level of integrity throughout their academic pursuit. Intellectually honest academic work represents independent analysis and acknowledges all sources of information that contribute to the ideas being explored.

Intellectually honest academic work acknowledges all sources of information that contribute to the ideas we explore.
When students misrepresent others' work as their own, faculty cannot accurately assess performance or provide the feedback students need in order to learn. In addition, the academic dishonesty of a few students devalues the learning of all their peers. Ultimately, academic dishonesty damages the value and reputation of a UMUC degree for everyone.
UMUC's policy on academic dishonesty and plagiarism ensures that the principles of academic integrity are upheld and outlines the procedures for alleged violations. Maintaining academic integrity in our work requires mastery of essential skills and competencies, such as integrating others' ideas into an analysis, thinking critically about sources, and directly citing the work of others. UMUC is committed to helping students learn and master these skills.

Academic misconduct strikes at the core of UMUC's mission because it undermines the learning process and compromises the quality and reputation of a UMUC degree. Hence, the university is committed to addressing all alleged instances of academic misconduct in accordance with the following policies:
- UMUC Policy 150.25 - Academic Dishonesty and Plagiarism
- UMUC Policy 150.50 - Misconduct In Scholarly Work
The failure to uphold academic integrity includes: falsification of data; improper assignment of credit; and any representation of the ideas, words, or work of others as one's own. When students misrepresent their work, faculty cannot accurately assess their performance or provide the feedback students need to learn. Students who plagiarize or cheat harm themselves and ultimately damage the value and reputation of a UMUC degree for everyone.
UMUC provides a number of resources and support for students and faculty to help them understand the value of academic integrity and to avoid scholarly misconduct. All members of the UMUC community are accountable for knowing and practicing university-wide policies regarding academic integrity, as well as any procedures specific to their school, program, and course.
