Social Sciences

Welcome from the Program Chair

Welcome to the Social Sciences at University of Maryland University College!

Understanding of society, culture and diversity is critical for success in today’s global workplace.  A degree in social science provides a powerful academic foundation, broadly-based and interdisciplinary, giving you an opportunity to develop skills that today’s employers value in their employees.  Social science majors study, learn and refine their oral and written communication, interpersonal skills, teamwork, analytical skills, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

The social science major is an interdisciplinary major that allows students to take courses in fields such as sociology, behavioral science, anthropology, gerontology, criminal justice and government and politics.

At UMUC, you can explore the social sciences through:

  • The interdisciplinary major (Bachelor of Science in Social Science)
  • Minor in Sociology
  • Minor in Diversity Awareness
  • General education or elective courses in anthropology, sociology or behavioral sciences

Our faculty in the social sciences (anthropology, sociology and the interdisciplinary behavioral sciences) represent truly dedicated educators and experienced professionals, eager to share their academic knowledge, professional expertise and real-life work experience with UMUC students.

With the strong academic foundation of a BS in Social Science from UMUC, you can further prepare for a wide range of careers including education; federal, state and local government; social service agencies; criminal justice including law, probation, parole and law enforcement; and business and industry.

Come explore society, culture and diversity through the social sciences at UMUC!
