Getting Started

  1. What is UMUC’s relationship to other University of Maryland Institutions?

    UMUC is not directly affiliated with the other schools in the system, but is recognized as part of the University System of Maryland.



  2. Do I need to take the SAT, ACT, or write an essay to be accepted to UMUC?

    No, UMUC does not require you to submit SAT or ACT scores, nor do we require an entrance essay. UMUC does require a high school transcript or GED scores from students who have completed less than 24 collegiate credit hours.

Transcript Information

  1. Will UMUC request transcripts for me?

    UMUC does not request transcripts on students’ behalf.  To request a transcript, contact each of your previous schools to have them send official transcripts to UMUC.

Tuition and Fees

  1. How much does it cost to attend UMUC?

  2. What makes me a Maryland resident?

    To verify if you meet the requirements for in state residency, please read the University System of Maryland Policy on Student Classification for Admission and Tuition Purposes.


  3. Once I enroll in classes, when is payment due?

    Payment is generally due within ten days from registration. Payment is due at the time of registration if registration takes place within ten days of the start of classes.

  4. Does UMUC have a payment plan?

    Yes. Learn more about the convenient Payment Options available to you.


  5. How do I start my military Veterans Benefits? 

    There are different processes based on the type of benefits you are using.  Learn more about the Veterans Benefits programs available to UMUC students.


  6. What is FAFSA?

    The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, is to be completed by students seeking financial assistance. Students will typically apply for FAFSA when seeking grants, scholarships, and loans. Learn more by visiting UMUC’s Financial Aid. To be eligible for financial aid, students must take a minimum of 6 credits per semester (part-time).

Academic Timeline

  1. How many credits makes me a full-time student at UMUC?

    To be considered a full-time student at UMUC, you need to be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours. Please note: Employers or other entities may have different standards for full-time status.


  2. How long does it take to complete an undergraduate degree?

    In a traditional environment, a bachelor’s degree can take four years to complete. However, factors such as transfer credit or course load can affect the duration of your studies.

Online Study

  1. What programs can I complete entirely online?

    UMUC offers a variety of bachelor’s degree programs that can be completed entirely online. View the list of undergraduate online majors and minors.


  2. Are the online classes cheaper than the on-site courses?

    Tuition at UMUC is the same for both online and on-site classes. 

  3. Can I take online classes if I don't have a computer?

    You do not have to have your own computer to take online classes. However, you must have access to a computer at least  a few hours each week in order to participate and complete assignments. 

  4. Do I have to buy real textbooks for online classes or are they available online?

    Most classes do require textbooks. The MBS Direct Bookstore carries all required textbooks for online classes at UMUC. They have both hardcopy texts and e-books for purchase.

  5. Can I take my final exams online?

    Final exams cannot be completed online. Final exams must be proctored at a testing center at 2- and 4-year colleges or universities, commercial learning/tutoring centers, military education offices, or corporate education centers.  You can find more information about approved proctors by visiting the Exams and Testing Services Web site.

  1. Can I earn college credit for my work or volunteer experience?

    Through CLEP exams and our Prior Learning Program, you can earn credits towards your degree from your life and work experience.  Learn more about CLEP and Prior Learning.
