Create a Personal UNIX Account

The following procedure can be used to create a personal computer account on UMUC's UNIX system, Polaris. The account will remain active as long as
  • students take classes in consecutive spring and fall semesters or
  • faculty members remain active.
You MUST be sure that you know your UMUC PIN number before you attempt to create an account. If you do not know your PIN, follow the appropriate directions shown below.
  • Students: Go to www.umuc.edu, Click: Current Students, Click: Retrieve Your PIN
  • Faculty:   Call 240-582-2600 or your academic department

1.  Login to your ISP. If your system permits direct telnet access, type: telnet://polaris.umuc.edu in the location textbox.

2. At the "login:" prompt, type: newuser

3.  At the "Please enter your SSN " prompt, enter your social security number (or student identification number). If an account already exists on one of UMUC's other academic systems for the specified SSN, no new account will be created. Please note that only one personal account is permitted.

4. At the "Please enter your PIN " prompt, enter your four-digit University College PIN number. Three incorrect entries will block you from further attempts.  If this occurs, contact the Help Desk at 301-985-7400.

5. After your SSN/PIN information has been verified, you will be asked to accept our security policy. To agree to the terms of the policy, type accept.

6. An account will be created and your user id and a temporary password will be displayed on the screen. PLEASE BE SURE TO WRITE DOWN YOUR USER ID AND TEMPORARY PASSWORD!

7. The first time you sign onto your account, you will be required to change your password. Passwords must be between six and eight characters and contain at least one non-alphabetic character.
  • At the "Enter Login Password:" prompt, enter the temporary password you were initially assigned in step 5.
  • At the "New Password: " prompt, type in a password of your choice.
  • At the "Re-enter new password: " prompt, type the new password again for verification. You will then use this new password each time you login.
