SUBJECT: Academic Advising

  1. Introduction

    1. UMUC has developed academic advising services in accordance with the Board of Regents Policy III-2.50 Policy on Academic Advising, approved on June 21, 1990. UMUC recognizes that adult learners have unique needs for academic advising. The policy of UMUC is to provide comprehensive advising services at times and locations convenient for adult students. Generally, these services are provided on an individual basis (sometimes in a group format) and are conducted by professional advising staff and/or faculty. Supplemental advising services and information may be found on UMUC Web sites and in UMUC written publications. Students are responsible for reading information provided by UMUC.

    2. The UMUC-Adelphi Undergraduate Student Affairs staff services undergraduate students for undergraduate courses originating from UMUC-Adelphi. The UMUC-Adelphi faculty, Graduate Student Affairs staff, and academic coordinators service graduate students for graduate courses originating from UMUC-Adelphi. The UMUC-Europe Student Affairs staff services students for courses originating from UMUC-Europe. The UMUC-Asia Student Affairs staff services students for courses originating from UMUC-Asia. Staff of the Schwäbisch Gmünd Office of the Registrar services students for courses originating from Schwäbisch Gmünd. All UMUC staff described above strive to help students clarify their educational goals and develop strategies for reaching these goals. 

    3. Academic advising is not mandatory; rather, it is provided at the student's initiative.

  2. Academic Advising

    All UMUC staff described in Section I.B. above

    1. aid students in curriculum planning and course selection;

    2. provide a basic orientation to all UMUC student services, making referrals to the individual departments or other student services teams when necessary;

    3. apprise students of procedures for earning academic credit through nontraditional means (for undergraduate students only);

    4. provide unofficial and official transfer-credit evaluations of coursework required for graduation for undergraduate students and provide official transfer-credit evaluations of coursework required for graduation for graduate students; and

    5. make a final review of academic credit and clear students for graduation.
