Undergraduate Levels of Progress
-
Introduction
-
At the end of every term, each undergraduate student’s cumulative grade-point average is computed on the basis of all graded UMUC courses to determine the level of academic progress. There are four levels of academic progress: satisfactory, warning, probation, and dismissal.
-
The appropriate student affairs unit will notify undergraduate students, in writing, who receive an academic warning, are placed on probation, or are academically dismissed.
-
Satisfactory
-
Warning
-
A student who has attempted 15 semester hours or more at UMUC and whose cumulative GPA is less than 2.0 will be placed on academic warning. The student will remain on academic warning as long as the cumulative GPA is less than 2.0 and the semester GPA is 2.0 or better.
-
A student who attempts 15 semester hours or more in a period of at least two semesters and earns no quality points will receive an academic warning regardless of the cumulative grade-point average.
-
A student on academic warning is limited to a maximum enrollment of 7 semester hours per semester or to a maximum of 4 semester hours per term I or term II.
-
Probation
-
A student on academic warning or admitted on provisional status (see Policy 210.00 Undergraduate Admissions Policy) whose semester GPA is less than 2.0 will be put on probation.
-
A student on probation whose semester GPA is 2.0 or better, but whose cumulative GPA is less than 2.0, will return to academic warning or provisional status.
-
A student on probation is limited to a maximum enrollment of 7 semester hours per semester or to a maximum of 4 semester hours per term I or term II.
-
Dismissal
-
A student on probation whose semester GPA is less than 2.0 will be dismissed.
-
Regardless of cumulative GPA, a student who has maintained an average of at least 2.0 during a particular semester or trimester will not be dismissed at the end of that period.
-
Reinstatement
-
Students who are academically dismissed are not eligible to register again for UMUC courses until after they are reinstated.
-
Students seeking reinstatement are required to wait at least one semester (or two terms) before petitioning for reinstatement. Petitions from UMUC-Adelphi undergraduate students should be addressed to the Associate Provost, Undergraduate Student Affairs; and petitions from UMUC-Europe and UMUC-Asia students should be addressed to their respective Offices of the Registrar; and petitions from Schwäbisch Gmünd students should be addressed to the Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs and Registrar. Before petitioning, students must have all official transcripts from previously attended colleges and universities sent to UMUC and must confer with an advisor. The petition must be made in writing and must contain an explanation of how the student will be able to improve academic performance.
-
After all the required steps have been completed, the student will receive a written response. Reinstated students will be immediately placed on warning or will retain provisional status, as appropriate.
-
Graduate Levels of Progress (master’s degrees and certificates)
-
Introduction
At the end every term, the cumulative grade-point average is reviewed to determine academic standing.
-
Good Academic Standing
Good academic standing is defined as a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
-
Academic Probation
A student is placed on academic probation when the academic standing review reveals a cumulative grade point average below 3.0. Students on academic probation must raise the cumulative grade point average to 3.0 or higher by the end of the next term of enrollment. Failure to do so results in academic dismissal.
-
Academic Dismissal
A student on academic probation who fails to raise the cumulative grade-point average to 3.0 or higher is academically dismissed. Students academically dismissed from a graduate program are not eligible for readmission to a UMUC graduate program.
-
Grades of F
Any course in which a final grade of F is earned must be repeated in the next semester of enrollment. No grade of F may remain on the student transcript at the time of program completion, regardless of GPA.
- Doctoral Levels of Progress
The cumulative grade-point average is 2.0 or higher.
Doctoral students should refer to UMUC Policy 170.11 – Doctoral Program Policies for information on Doctoral levels of progress.
