Legal Research Tutorial

Module 1: Finding Secondary Legal Information

Books

A variety of books are available on legal topics including legal encyclopedias, practical handbooks, and scholarly books. Depending on the particular source, the level of coverage will range from brief overviews to in-depth treatises on a legal issue or concept. You have access to several resources that will help you locate books on legal topics:

  • You can search the online USMAI library catalog, to find legal books and other material held by University System of Maryland and Affiliated Institutions (USMAI) libraries.

Please note that students who live in Maryland can have books delivered to a USMAI library near them for pickup and students who live in the continental US outside of Maryland can have books sent to their home address via UPS. For more information, please see Get It Delivered.

  • UMUC students have access to over 7,000 e-books, many covering legal issues, through NetLibrary. You can find NetLibrary titles through the USMAI library catalog, but you can access them directly through our  E-Books page.

  • DocumentExpress is available for books that are not in the USMAI catalog and for book chapters.
