Find It Overview
(Text-Only Version)

Librarian:

Welcome to the Information and Library Services Find It Presentation!

Student:

Hello, I'm a new UMUC student and I keep hearing about something called "find it" that will help me find journal articles in full text. What is "find it" and how does it work?

Librarian:

"Find it" provides links from a citation in a database to the full text of that article, where available, and to other helpful resources and services. You can tell that "find it" is available in a database when you see the find it button, which looks like this: find it.

Librarian:

Certainly. Let's take a tour in one of the databases and I can show you how to use find it! Start from the Information and Library Services main Web page (http://www.umuc.edu/library).

Click on the link, Articles & More.

Student:

Can we take a look at find it in the Business Source Premier database? My assignment is to find articles on automation in human resources departments.

Librarian:

Certainly. Just click on the letter "B".

And then the link for Business Source Premier.

Enter your search terms into the search box and click on the search button.

You'll retrieve a list of articles. In many databases such as Business Source Premier, most of them will be in full-text.

When they're not full-text, you can click on the find it button. When you click on find it, you will see either a full text link or links for that article in one or more different databases or a link to the DocumentExpress form.

Student:

I am not sure what this means. Could you show me?

Librarian:

Sure, let's click on two articles with find it buttons to view the two alternatives of what might be available.

For this article, there is full text available in a number of different databases. You can tell because the link says, "Get full text from ABI /Inform Global".

You can click directly on one, or if available, more of these links to find the full text in the database. Sometimes you will go right to that article in the linked database, but sometimes you may need to search again in that database.

Now, let's view what the second option will show you. Let's click on an article where no full text is available.

Usually when the full-text article isn't available in UMUC's collection you can obtain the full text article quickly by filling out the DocumentExpress form with your personal information.

Enter in your last name and barcode or social security number, depending on the UMUC division.

The information about the article is already filled in for you! The DocumentExpress staff will find the article and send it to you electronically.

Student:

Thanks! And what does holdings in the catalogUSMAI mean?

Librarian:

catalogUSMAI is the combined online catalog for all the libraries in the University System of Maryland and Affiliated Institutions. You can click here to get information on which of the campuses own the journal in print format.

By the way , if you click on the link to more options, there is also a link to the find it FAQ page, which explains in more detail how to use find it and provides other tips.

Student:

Oh! That's fantastic. What if I need help later on with find it?

Librarian:

If you need more help with find it, please contact the library staff.

Or you can go directly to the find it FAQ page.
