S.K. BhaskarS.K. Bhashar, Phd

Assistant Dean, Computer Information Systems and Technology

S. K. Bhaskar joined UMUC in 1998 after serving as senior programmer and analyst at SRA Technologies Inc. He holds an MS from the School of Automation, Indian Institute of Science, in Bangalore, India, and earned his PhD in computer science from the University of Maryland, College Park.

David JohnsonDavid Robinson, Phd

Program Director, Digital Media and Web Technology

David Johnson received his MS in computer systems management from UMUC and earned a PhD in occupational studies from the University of Georgia. Johnson teaches courses in the areas of web design, electronic publishing, digital media, and computer applications and serves on the advisory board of the Maryland Distance Learning Association.

Donna McKalipDonna McKalip, DM

Program Director, Information Systems Management

Donna McKalip received an MA from Central Michigan University, an MS from UMUC, and a DM from UMUC. McKalip brings several years of management experience in acquisitions projects and IT systems to UMUC. She teaches project management and courses that relate information technology solutions to business and organizational strategic goals. She is also a member of the Project Management Institute.

James RobinsonJames Robertson, EdD

Program Director, Computer and Information Science and Computer Science

James Robertson joined UMUC in 2001 after serving as a principal consultant at Oracle. He earned his MS in electro-optical engineering from the University of Dayton and his EdD in instructional technology from Towson University. He teaches programming, database, computer graphics, and image and signal processing courses at UMUC. He also presents papers and participates in technical discussions at conferences across the United States.

Jeff TjiputraJeff Tjiputra, DSc

Program Director, Computer Networks and Security and Cybersecurity

Jeff Tjiputra earned his MLS in internetworking management from Fort Hays State University and his DSc in systems engineering from the George Washington University. He serves on the advisory board for the GovSec Conference in Washington, D.C.

Irena BojanovaIrena Bojanova, PhD

Program Director, Telecommunications Management
Collegiate Associate Professor

Irena Bojanova has a PhD in computer science/mathematics from Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and an MS in mathematics from Sofia University. She managed academic programs at the Johns Hopkins University and Pisoft Ltd. and co-started OBS Ltd. (now CSC Bulgaria). Her current research interests include cloud computing, computer security, and educational innovations. She received the 2013 University System of Maryland Board of Regents Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching, the 2011 United States Distance Learning Award for Outstanding Leadership by an Individual in the Field of Distance Learning, and the National University Technology Network Distance Education Innovation Award. She is an associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Cloud Computing, an editorial board member of IEEE Computer Society's IT Professional, and the founding chair of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Computer Society's Cloud Computing Special Technology Communities. She also has a cloud computing blog at the IEEE.

Michael Brown joined UMUC in 2012 after spending more than 20 years working in the information technology field, where he held positions with Sun Microsystems and NASA. He has a PhD from Nova Southeastern University and a master's degree and bachelor's degree from Shippensburg University.

Elena GortchevaElena Gortcheva, PhD

Elena Gortcheva joined UMUC in 2003 after a 15-year computer engineering career in academia as a professor/researcher and industry consultant. She holds an MS in electronic engineering and earned her PhD in computer engineering from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

Charles Charles "Steve" Knode

Charles "Steve" Knode has taught courses such as operations management, artificial intelligence, decision making, neural networks, decision support systems, expert systems, management science, and statistics for more than 35 years. His professional interests include emerging information technologies, artificial intelligence, virtual environments, intelligent agents, and decision making. He is a retired U.S. Air Force officer who served 20 years in the military in a variety of analytical and decision-making positions. He earned a PhD in operations research management from Syracuse University, an MS in industrial management from the University of North Dakota, and a BS in mathematics from Duke University.

Program Director, Health Informatics Administration and Health Care Administration

Katherine Marconi came to UMUC with more than 25 years of experience working in state, national, and international public health. Previously, she was director of strategic information for a White House initiative, the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, where she led a group of health professionals who coordinated HIV data collection and analysis from 36 countries among six U.S. government agencies. In that role, she provided and reviewed information for the president and his staff.

Previously, she led science and epidemiological staff in HIV, organ transplantation, and cancer prevention programs at the Health Resources and Services Administration and the National Cancer Institute in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

She was a member of the White House Health Care Interdepartmental Working Group during the Clinton administration's health care reform effort and worked for the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

She has a PhD in sociology from the George Washington University and an executive MS in technology management from UMUC. During and after her graduate work, she received a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship and a World Health Organization Fogarty Center Fellowship.

Marconi has published and presented on a variety of health topics, including chapters in Big Data and Business Analytics and Epidemiology of Women's Health. She has published articles ranging from "Access and Equity in Palliative Care" to "The Paradigm Shift in Medicaid: Women with HIV Under Managed Care," and "Concentrate on Health: Pursue Politics Judiciously" in such journals as Palliative Medicine, Gerontologist, Health Affairs, The American Journal of Public Health, Public Health Reports, and The New England Journal of Medicine. In 2012, she was recognized by UMUC for her contributions to "AIDS 2031 Cost and Financing Working Group Synthesis Report.

Theresa Marron-GrodskyTheresa Marron-Grodsky, PhD

Theresa Marron-Grodsky has held a number of positions, including program director of marketing, program director of public relations; associate chair of the Management, Accounting, and Finance department; chair of the Management, Accounting, and Finance department; and program director of project management. She has a PhD in communications from the University of Maryland, College Park. She has also held positions in public relations and marketing survey research.

Moe ShahdadMoe Shahdad, PhD

Program Director, Project Management
Collegiate Professor

Moe Shahdad has experience in the areas of project management, product marketing, and business management. His project management experience includes development of computer-aided design tools for the electronics industry and the government, as well as development of international standards for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. His most recent area of research is the development of languages for electronic design, where he has designed and developed an array of software products for the design of electronic systems and chips. He has also managed business units related to these products and has had responsibility for development, marketing, and sales functions. He has a BS in electrical engineering, an MS in mathematics, and a PhD in computer science.
