Bookends - Meet the Author
"What Are They Fighting For?" Lecture with Author Natalie Kimbrough, PhD

Take a journey of exploration with Natalie Kimbrough, PhD, author of Equality or Discrimination: African Americans in the U.S. Military During the Vietnam War. This lecture will examine the possible reasons African Americans joined the military during the Vietnam War, and look at their individual experiences.

Topics include discrimination, and how that affected African Americans' motivations to fight in the war. This exploration uses the Racial Formation Theory by focusing on three different experiences. Using this Theory allows us to expand our understanding for why anyone, regardless of race, would choose to join the military, and helps us learn to better distinguish between soldiers' work and their politics.
