Eligibility and Application

Eligibility criteria

  • Currently full time or adjunct faculty in any division who have taught online or hybrid courses or who will teach one during the 2009-2010 calendar year.
  • Must be certified in CTLA 201 by time of application
  • Preferably have taught at least 3 classes (face-to-face, online, or hybrid) as full-time faculty or 5 classes combined as full-time and adjunct since January 2007
  • Adjuncts should have taught at least 3 classes since January 2007
  • Should have an average score of 4.0 or above on student class evaluations during the past two years
  • Should show evidence of potential leadership ability and commitment to UMUC (see list below)
  • Priority given to those who have not attended a Summer Institute in the past two years (2007 and 2008 Summer Institutes)

Application Process

Faculty interested and eligible to attend should indicate their interest to their academic administrator as noted on the timetable by filling out and sending the self nomination application form found at (form link goes here)

Each school will select the final list of attendees.

Air Travel: Air travel to and from Adelphi will be supported for all overseas faculty. Overseas faculty must reserve their air travel through the UMUC travel office by the deadline indicated on the timetable below.

Local faculty: Please note: CTL will not reimburse for out of state or foreign travel by local faculty who are residing or visiting out of state just prior to the Institute. Reimbursement will be made to local faculty for driving or other ground travel arrangements. Those who live approximately 50 miles or more from campus will be provided with hotel rooms.
  
Evidence of Leadership and Commitment to UMUC

  • Facilitated workshop here at UMUC or externally
  • Delivered discipline-related presentation at a conference, a UMUC discipline meeting, or a departmental “999” classroom
  • Served on professional or editorial board
  • Participated and/or held a leadership position in a professional association
  • Regularly attends UMUC faculty meetings
  • Developed or served as content expert for a course or an assignment that became a standard offering in the curriculum of a program
  • Served as peer mentor or informal mentor
  • Successfully completed 3 UMUC or CTL faculty development workshops over the past 2 years
  • Service to the university through FAC, academic committees, etc.

Post-Institute Commitment from Attendees:

Attendees are expected to participate in all Institute sessions. All those accepting invitations to attend the Summer Institute must also make a commitment to sharing what they have learned with other faculty or serving their departments through one of the following options or an arrangement worked out with their academic administrators. Attendees should contact their administrator no later than September 1st to begin discussion of their intended commitment and to have the proposal approved by their administrator. Participants will be sent an electronic Post-Institute Commitment Proposal form after the Institute, along with a detailed timeline and instructions.

Some options are:

  • Serve as a Peer Mentor
  • Present at a department meeting or in a WebTycho 999 classroom
  • Serve on an academic committee
  • Run for a position on FAC
  • Serve on a doctoral committee (GSMT)
  • Assist in the redesign of some part of a course or exam at request of administrator
  • Serve as a facilitator of a faculty development workshop with CTL
  • Complete other special project as agreed upon with administrator

Timetable

Feb 23 - Deadline for candidates to send applications to directors and assistant deans (SUS), chairs (GSMT) and to assistant and associate deans (UMUC Europe and Asia)

April 1 - CTL notifies all candidates of their selection

April 14 - all candidates must notify CTL of acceptance.

May 1 - all air travel arrangements for faculty must be completed through Laura Foreman’s office

collaborative effort between CTL and various units within UMUC.
