Like every great university, UMUC invites its alumni to become stakeholders in its mission of serving adult learners in a technology-rich environment. Every year, more alumni answer the call, becoming annual contributors and providing critical financial support for key programs.

This year, callers have been contacting donors to thank them for their generosity and to invite their ongoing support for the 2001-2002 fund drive. The university is also mailing letters to alumni, asking them to contribute and detailing the ways that their gifts can advance the university's mission.

Alumni contribute in various ways. Unrestricted gifts are especially helpful, providing funds for special opportunities or unanticipated expenses, but donors can also give designated gifts. The Millennial Scholarship Fund, for example, provides assistance to students who otherwise would not be able to pursue a college education. This endowed fund was established in 2000 and already exceeds $100,000.

Individual donors may establish a named scholarship fund by pledging $10,000 or more over a period of up to five years. Such donors become lifetime members of the UMUC President's Club.

In the wake of the September 11th tragedies, UMUC alumni and students in the military have played an important role in our national response to terrorism, many of which include roles in fire, rescue, and emergency planning. To prepare future generations to respond to the realities of our world, UMUC is in the process of establishing a fire science scholarship.
