UMUC’s "Virtual Dragons" Make History on the Potomac

Networking Event Held in San Antonio, Texas

The first San Antonio, Texas, alumni networking event was held April 5, 2002, at the Marriott Riverwalk in beautiful downtown San Antonio. Thanks in large part to the efforts of Howard Cain ’68, who went beyond the call of duty to personally contact and invite over 100 alumni, more than 60 people attended. Plans are already underway to form a San Antonio alumni chapter to provide greater networking opportunities for the more than 900 alumni who live in and around San Antonio.

The Master of International Management (IMAN) Chapter of the Alumni Association held its fourth annual dinner April 6, 2002, at the Hyatt Regency in Bethesda, Maryland. The chapter is committed to raising funds for scholarships that will support graduate students studying international management. This year the IMAN Chapter raised more than $3,800, a portion of which was directed to the Harvey Wallender Memorial Scholarship, named after a graduate faculty member who died in 2000 and who was greatly admired and respected by his students in the IMAN program. Additional funds raised this year went to support the newly created Fire Science Scholarship.

This year’s IMAN Outstanding Alumnus—Peter O’Neil ’95, director of international trade at the Maryland Office of International Trade Development—was honored during the dinner. Each year, the outstanding alumnus award is presented to a graduate of the IMAN program who has demonstrated outstanding application of international management principles. Joyce Wright ’90 & ’94, who received the award last year, traveled from Australia to join this year’s festivities and to network with fellow IMAN alumni.
